My Writing Life

I write because it’s in my DNA. For me it’s a form of play, discovery, and connection. It makes me happy. I write for the shy, unsure girl I once was and for readers who feel that way now. (I see you and understand.)
I write for children because I admire the way they experience life—with passion, honesty, imagination. I want my writing to be a safe harbor for readers to wonder, imagine, learn, and laugh and create their own story.
I’m an eclectic writer. I enjoy writing picture books, humor, chapter books, biographies, nonfiction, informational fiction, and haiku.
My favorite topics are nature, animals, people with unusual life stories and exploring ideas that make me wonder.
Some of my themes include being vulnerable, the true meaning of beauty, stretching limits, finding one’s power, social justice, and being a champion for others.

Join Me in Some Haiku

The natural world is a muse that relaxes me and feeds my curiosity. I discovered haiku early in high school; Bashō and Issa were my favorites.
This year I began to take my haiku, photos, and photos of friends to Twitter weekly. I enjoy participating in #HaikuSaturday, created by Susan Andrews. Look for me every Saturday on twitter for a new haiku!
