Long Bio
As a kid, I enjoyed freeze tag, whiffle ball with my brothers, and Saturday morning cartoons. Bugs Bunny was my favorite. I’m the oldest of four and there are thirteen years between my sister and me.
My Dad taught history and spent many happy years as an elementary school principal while Mom taught business until I popped up on Groundhog’s Day. She loved to throw theme parties and wrote poetry for these occasions. Everyone in our family loved reading. Crictor the Boa Constrictor, Mike Mulligan, and later Nancy Drew and Phyllis A. Whitney kept me turning pages. At Holy Angels Elementary, my love affair with writing began. I wrote bad poetry in my journal and won the school-wide writing contest as an eighth grader. My school could only afford the basics, so mom enrolled me in ballet and drawing classes at the Dayton Art Institute. I still love to dabble with art and danced on stage in my thirties. |
My Alter High School years brought years of clubs, dances, and very few dates. I joined many clubs: Girls’ Athletic Club, Future Teachers—yearbook, and newspaper were my favorites. I credit English teacher Sister Julia for encouraging me as a writer. My library career began at the Wright Library when I couldn’t pay off my overdue book fines.
In college at The Ohio State University, I majored in English Education, and studied art history and philosophy. My dorm mates queued up at term paper time for my editing skills. Later I received my M. Ed. in Curriculum and Supervision and certification in library science. (All those years in the library paid off.) I taught seventh graders and loved to attend school dances. As a high school librarian at Wayne High School, Huber Height, my student aides were football players, computer “nerds,” and kids I’d taught in seventh grade.
The adult me is still a kid at heart. I’m curious and love exploring new topics for books. Since my retirement, I sold books Cover to Cover Books for Young Readers, worked for Junior Library Guild, and as a substitute teacher. My husband Bob and I live in Columbus, Ohio with our rescue Corgi, Scrappy Doo, who is the main character in our lives along with grandkids Tobin and Rosie.
